Match fishing is one of the most rewarding forms of coarse fishing — competitive, social, and endlessly tactical. If you're just starting out, the sheer amount of tackle and terminology can feel overwhelming. This guide cuts through the noise and gives you a practical, no-nonsense setup to get you catching from day one on UK commercial fisheries.

What is Match Fishing?

Match fishing is a timed competition where anglers fish a designated peg (swim) and weigh in their catch at the end. The angler with the most weight wins. Most matches on commercial venues last 5 hours and target carp, F1s, and silvers (bream, roach, skimmer bream, perch).

Essential Tackle for Beginners

Rod

For commercial match fishing, a 10ft or 11ft match rod rated 5–10g is ideal. It's versatile enough for waggler fishing, light feeder work, and short-range casting. Look for a medium-fast action that gives good bite detection without being too stiff.

Reel

A 2500–3000 size fixed spool reel is perfect for beginners. Look for a smooth drag, a decent line lay, and a spare spool. Load with 4–6lb monofilament for most commercial fishing.

Pole (Optional but Recommended)

A pole gives you far more accuracy and control than a rod and line, especially at short range. A beginner 8–10 metre pole is a worthwhile investment if you plan to fish matches regularly. You don't need to fish it at full length to start — 5–6 metres is plenty for most commercial pegs.

Line

  • Main line: 4–6lb monofilament for rod fishing.
  • Hooklength: 2–4lb for most commercial fishing. Go lighter (1.5–2lb) for silvers and F1s.
  • Pole elastic: Size 8–12 solid or hollow elastic for carp. Size 4–6 for F1s and silvers.

Hooks

  • Size 14–16 fine wire for maggots, casters, and small pellets.
  • Size 12–14 for corn, worm, and expander pellets.
  • Size 10–12 for meat and larger hook baits.

Floats

  • Waggler floats (straight or insert) for rod and line fishing at range.
  • Pole floats (0.1g–0.5g) for short-range pole fishing. Start with a small selection of 0.2g and 0.3g floats.

Essential Bait for Beginners

Keep your bait selection simple to start. These four baits will cover most situations on a commercial fishery:

  • Pellets (2mm and 4mm): The number one commercial bait. Use 2mm as loose feed and 4mm on the hook (banded or hair-rigged).
  • Maggots: Brilliant for silvers and F1s. Use as loose feed and on the hook. Always have a pint with you.
  • Sweetcorn: A reliable change bait for carp and F1s. Cheap, easy to use, and very effective.
  • Groundbait: A bag of commercial groundbait mixed to a crumbly consistency is useful for feeding silvers and building a swim.

Simple Beginner Rigs

Waggler Rig (Rod & Line)

  1. Thread a straight waggler float onto your main line and lock it with two float stops or shot.
  2. Set the depth so your hook bait just touches the bottom.
  3. Add a small shot 6 inches from the hook to cock the float and hold the bait down.
  4. Cast out, tighten up, and wait for the float to dip or lift.

Pole Rig

  1. Attach a 0.2g–0.3g pole float to your rig line using float rubbers.
  2. Set the depth so your hook bait is just on the bottom.
  3. Bulk your shot 12–18 inches from the hook with a small dropper shot 4–6 inches from the hook.
  4. Ship the rig out to your chosen distance and hold the pole still.

  • Start simple: Fish one line at a time and master the basics before adding complexity.
  • Feed little and often: Small amounts of bait regularly is almost always better than big helpings infrequently.
  • Watch other anglers: See what's working on the day and adapt. Match fishing is as much about observation as technique.
