The Great Maggot Shortage: What Anglers Need to Know
Share
If you've been struggling to get hold of maggots lately, you're not alone. Anglers across the UK have been reporting shortages at their local tackle shops, and it's a topic that's been buzzing around the bankside for weeks. Here's what's going on — and what you can do about it.
Why Are Maggots in Short Supply?
Maggot production in the UK is a surprisingly complex operation. A combination of factors has hit supply hard this season:
- Heatwaves and extreme weather — High temperatures affect the breeding cycle of blowflies, disrupting production at maggot farms across the country.
- Rising costs — Feed costs and energy bills have squeezed maggot farmers, with some scaling back or closing altogether.
- Increased demand — Coarse fishing participation has surged in recent years, putting extra pressure on an already stretched supply chain.
- Distribution bottlenecks — Fewer hauliers willing to transport live bait has created logistical headaches for suppliers and retailers alike.
What Does This Mean for Your Fishing?
Maggots remain one of the most versatile and effective baits in coarse fishing — whether you're targeting roach, bream, tench, or carp. A shortage doesn't mean you have to stay off the bank, but it does mean planning ahead and being flexible with your bait choices.
Top Alternative Baits to Consider
The good news? There are plenty of excellent alternatives that can be just as deadly on the right day:
- Casters — The chrysalis stage of the maggot, casters are a premium bait that often outfishes maggots, especially for bigger fish. Worth every penny.
- Pinkies & Squatts — Smaller larvae that are brilliant for winter fishing and feeding tight to the hook bait.
- Worms — Dendrobaenas and red worms are a fantastic natural alternative, especially after rain when fish are feeding aggressively.
- Pellets — Micro pellets (2mm–4mm) are a superb maggot substitute on commercial fisheries. Pair with a banded pellet on the hook for a deadly combination.
- Groundbait — A well-mixed groundbait with attractors can draw fish into your swim and keep them feeding without relying on live bait at all.
- Corn & Meat — Cheap, effective, and often overlooked. Sweetcorn and luncheon meat are reliable big-fish baits that need no refrigeration.
Tips for Getting Maggots When You Can
- Order in advance — Don't leave it to the morning of your session. Pre-order from your local tackle shop or online supplier mid-week.
- Buy in bulk and share — Split a larger order with a fishing mate to reduce cost and waste.
- Store them properly — Keep maggots in a cool environment (a dedicated fridge at around 4–6°C is ideal) to slow them down and extend their life.
- Check availability regularly — Stock levels can change quickly. Sign up for back-in-stock notifications where available.
