Tackle Room Confessions: Things Every Angler Is Guilty Of
Share
We need to talk. Not about the one that got away — we've all heard that story enough times. No, this is about something far more serious. Something that happens behind closed doors, in the sacred space known as the tackle room.
Pull up a chair. It's time for some confessions.
1. "I Only Need One More Rod"
Said every angler, every time, forever. You've got seven rods. You need eight. It's simple maths, really. The fact that your partner has started referring to the spare bedroom as "the rod room" is completely irrelevant.
2. The Bait Graveyard
Somewhere in your tackle box, there is a pellet from 2019. You don't know how it got there. You don't know why you've kept it. But you absolutely cannot throw it away because what if — what if — it's the one that finally cracks the big carp on the far bank?
3. Buying Tackle "For a Specific Situation" That Never Arises
You bought a specialist rig for fishing in 4°C water, at night, during a full moon, on a Tuesday. You have used it zero times. It lives in a dedicated compartment in your tackle bag, waiting patiently for its moment. That moment is not coming.
4. The Optimistic Bait Order
You ordered enough groundbait to feed every carp in the UK for a fortnight. You were going fishing for one afternoon. The remaining 14kg is now stacked in the garage next to the Christmas decorations and a broken lawnmower.
5. Reorganising the Tackle Box Instead of Actually Fishing
You arrived at the bank at 6am. It is now 9am. You have not cast a single line. You have, however, completely reorganised your rig wallet, sorted your hooks by size, and colour-coded your pop-ups. Productive morning.
6. "I Know Exactly Where Everything Is"
You do not know where anything is. The size 10 hooks are in the car. The landing net is in the shed. The bait you specifically bought for today is on the kitchen counter at home. You are, however, very confident about all of this until you actually need something.
7. The Loyalty to a Failing Swim
You've been fishing the same spot for three sessions. Nothing. Not a single bite. But you know there's a fish there. You can feel it. You will return next week. And the week after. This is not stubbornness — this is dedication. There is a difference. (There is not a difference.)
8. Telling Non-Anglers About Your Day
"So I was fishing a 14mm Dynamite Baits Monster Tiger Nut bottom bait on a size 8 Korda Chod Rig, with a PVA bag of crushed pellet and a scattering of freebies around the spot..." Their eyes glazed over at "fishing". You are now 400 words in. They are thinking about lunch.
If you recognised yourself in any of the above — welcome. You're among friends. And if you need to restock the bait graveyard, reorganise your tackle box, or pick up that eighth rod, you know where to find us.
